Officer removed from duty after ramming runaway cow: UK police

An officer who tried to intercept a fleeing cow by hitting it with a vehicle in England has been removed from duty, police said in a statement on June 16.

The incident occurred on June 14 evening after police were called to a sighting of a cow in a residential area of the small town of Staines-upon-Thames in southern England.

Surrey Police on June 16 said that the officer driving the car had been “removed from frontline duties pending the outcome of these investigations”.

Russian journalist killed in Ukraine drone strike: Media

A Russian journalist was killed in a drone attack in eastern Ukraine, his news organisation said on June 16, two days after the death of another correspondent near the front line.

“Our correspondent Nikita Tsitsagi was killed during an attack by Ukrainian army drones,” News.Ru posted on Telegram.

It said the attack happened around the Saint-Nicolas monastery near the town of Vugledar, the scene of fierce fighting for the past three months.

Earthquake of magnitude 6.3 strikes off southern Peru

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Peru on June 16 but there was no immediate threat of tsunami, government scientists said.

The Geophysical Institute of Peru said the quake was centered in the Pacific at a depth of 25 kilometres off the coast of Arequipa department.

The government decided against activating the tsunami warning system.

‘I’m against extremes and divisive ideas’, says Mbappe

France superstar and captain Kylian Mbappe on June 16 declared himself “against extremes and divisive ideas” when asked about crucial upcoming legislative elections in the country.

Mbappe did not explicitly speak out against or in favour of any party ahead of the elections, the first round of which will take place on June 30 with the second round on July 7.

However, the striker defended comments made on June 15 by his teammate Marcus Thuram, saying he “had not gone too far” in calling on the country “to fight every day to stop” the far-right National Rally (RN) winning the elections.

Andy Murray uncertain if he’ll play in fifth Olympics

Andy Murray said June 16 he was “not 100 per cent sure” he will play at the Paris Olympics despite being selected just hours earlier for his fifth Games.

Murray, who has said he intends to retire later this year, was granted an International Tennis Federation (ITF) place to compete at the Games despite his lowly singles ranking of 97 because he is a former Grand Slam winner and Olympic champion.

Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski will represent Team GB in the men’s doubles and the pairing of Murray and Dan Evans have been nominated for an additional space in that competition, which will be determined by the ITF – the governing body of world tennis who run the tournament – on June 25.
