Biden tells Wisconsin rally he’s staying in the race

US President Joe Biden, scrambling to defuse a political crisis over his shaky debate performance, mocked and criticised Donald Trump at a rally on July 5, in a spirited speech meant to mute calls for him to quit the race because of his age.

Mr Biden travelled to Wisconsin, a political battleground state, to rally voters and sit for a television interview that will be closely watched after his debate with Trump prompted some Democrats and donors to question whether he can handle a second four-year term.

“We had a little debate last week. Can’t say it was my best performance. But ever since then there’s been a lot of speculation. ‘What’s Joe gonna do? Is he gonna stay in the race? Is he gonna drop out?“ Mr Biden said.

“Well here’s my answer: I am running and gonna win again.”

‘Astonished’ Germany says Hungary cancels meeting

Hungary has cancelled a meeting for July 8 in Budapest with Germany’s foreign minister and her Hungarian counterpart, a German foreign ministry official said on July 5.

The German ministry said it was “astonished”, and that a “serious and honest” discussion was needed after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 5.

The Moscow meeting was the first meeting of an EU leader with Mr Putin in Moscow since April 2022, two months after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The talks angered some European Union leaders who warned against appeasing Moscow and said Mr Orban did not speak for the EU.

WHO agency says talc is ‘probably’ cancer-causing

The World Health Organisation’s cancer agency on July 5 classified talc as “probably carcinogenic” for humans, however an outside expert warned against misinterpreting the announcement as a “smoking gun”.

The decision was based on “limited evidence” talc could cause ovarian cancer in humans, “sufficient evidence” it was linked to cancer in rats and “strong mechanistic evidence” that it shows carcinogenic signs in human cells, the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said.

Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined in many parts of the world and is often used to make talcum baby powder.

AFP

A Mikel Merino goal in the last moments of extra time gave Spain a dramatic 2-1 win over hosts Germany in an enthralling Euro 2024 quarter-final clash on July 5 between the tournament’s two most successful nations.

The game was into the 119th minute and looked set for a penalty shootout when substitute Merino rose to head home the winner from Dani Olmo’s cross to decide an eagerly anticipated match that hit fever pitch as the teams slugged it out at a raucous Stuttgart Arena.

Spain were the better side for the first hour and wasted several opportunities before Olmo gave them a deserved lead six minutes after the break, drilling home a first-time shot into the bottom corner.
