Malaysia moves ahead with proposed UN tribunal for MH17 culprits

Malaysia told the Security Council on Thursday that it plans to present a draft resolution soon on creating a UN tribunal to try those responsible for the downing of a Malaysia Airlines flight over Ukraine.

All 298 passengers and crew on board flight MH17 - the majority of them Dutch - died when the plane was shot down on July 17 last year.

Malaysian Ambassador Ramlan Ibrahim said the draft resolution and the draft statute of the proposed international criminal tribunal will be circulated to the 15 members next week, with a vote possibly this month.


BP to pay record $25 billion over Deepwater Horizon oil spill

British energy giant BP said Thursday it had agreed to pay a record US$18.7 billion (S$25.2 billion) to compensate the US government and five states for damages stemming from the deadly 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The spill was sparked by an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig, which killed 11 men.

Millions of barrels of oil flowed into Gulf waters, in one of the worst environmental disasters to strike the United States.


French mum jailed nine years for killing eight babies

A French court jailed a housewife for nine years on Thursday for killing eight of her newborns after a dramatic trial in which she lied about having an incestuous relationship with her father.

Dominique Cottrez, a 51-year-old former health worker, was found guilty of suffocating eight of her babies between 1989 and 2000, shortly after secretly giving birth to them.

Most of the killings occurred in the bathroom of her home near the Belgian border.


Car crash in western India kills child, injures lawmaker Hema Malini

A car accident involving popular Bollywood actress and Indian lawmaker Hema Malini killed a four-year-old girl late Thursday and injured several others including the politician, reports and an official said.

The 66-year-old member of parliament in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was rushed to a local hospital with minor injuries after her Mercedes reportedly collided with a small hatchback in the western desert state of Rajasthan.

"One girl child has died in the accident," local state lawmaker Shankar Lal Sharma told reporters.


Tennis: Nadal slumps to new Wimbledon humiliation

Rafael Nadal was sent crashing out of Wimbledon by dreadlocked German qualifier Dustin Brown (above) on Thursday, his fourth successive humiliation at the All England Club.

Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 champion, slumped to a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 second round defeat against the world No. 102 who hit 13 aces and 58 winners.

It was the 29-year-old's first ever defeat to a qualifier at a Grand Slam and came in the aftermath of losing his French Open crown where he had been champion nine times.
