Biden campaign swaps Trump criticism for unity after shooting
US President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign quickly upended its strategy after an assassination attempt on Republican rival Donald Trump in western Pennsylvania, calling off verbal attacks on the former president to focus instead on a message of unity.
Within hours of July 13’s shooting, Mr Biden’s campaign was pulling down television ads and suspending other political communications, including those that had highlighted Mr Trump’s May felony conviction in New York state court relating to hush money paid to a porn star to avert a sex scandal before the 2016 US election.
“We must unite as one nation,” Mr Biden said in White House remarks on July 14, adding he would have an Oval Office address in the evening. Mr Biden condemned political violence again, as he did on July 13 night, and asked Americans to “let the FBI do their job.”

The person shot and killed at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania on July 13 was a 50-year-old volunteer firefighter who shielded his family to protect them as gunshots rang out, the state’s Governor Josh Shapiro said on July 14.
The victim was identified as Corey Comperatore, according to his family’s posting on Facebook.
“The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most,” the victim’s sister said in the post on July 14.

A Hamas official said July 14 the Palestinian group was withdrawing from Gaza truce talks, following a deadly Israeli strike that targeted militant commander Mohammed Deif more than nine months into the war.
The Islamist group’s military chief Deif was “well and directly overseeing” operations, another Hamas official told AFP, despite the bombing raid on a southern Gaza displacement camp on July 13, which Israel said was an attempt to kill him.
The first senior official from the Iran-backed group, whose October 7 attack on southern Israel sparked the war, said Hamas was pulling out of negotiations towards a ceasefire partly because of Israeli “massacres”.

Spain substitute Mikel Oyarzabal slid in for an 86th-minute winner to earn his team a 2-1 Euro 2024 final victory over England on July 14 and a record fourth European crown.
Oyarzabal finished off a break for the winning goal as Spain were crowned champions, having won all seven games they played in the tournament
After an extremely cautious first half where Spain had more possession and their opponents got the only shot on target, it only took two minutes after the restart for the Spaniards to break the deadlock.
