Israeli PM not certain Hamas leader killed in strike
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was still not clear whether Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif and another senior commander were killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza on July 13, but he vowed to pursue Israel’s war aims to the end.
“Either way, we will get to the whole of the leadership of Hamas,” he told a televised news conference, adding that chances of an agreement to return Israeli hostages would be improved by increasing military pressure on Hamas.
The brief news conference was called after the Israeli military said it had conducted a strike based on what it said was precise intelligence, targeting Deif and senior Hamas commander Rafa Salama in the city of Khan Younis.
Palestinian health officials said the strike killed at least 90 Palestinians and wounded as many as 300 in the designated humanitarian zone of Al Mawasi, in the heaviest loss of life in weeks.
Bernie Sanders urges support for Biden’s candidacy

Senator Bernie Sanders, a prominent figure of the US political left, on July 13 voiced support for Joe Biden’s presidential candidacy despite calls for him to withdraw over health concerns.
“Enough! Mr Biden may not be the ideal candidate, but he will be the candidate and should be the candidate,” independent senator Mr Sanders wrote in a New York Times column, adding that “it’s time for Democrats to stop the bickering and nit-picking.”
Mr Sanders’ column comes amid steadily growing calls from Democratic officials and donors for 81-year-old Mr Biden to step aside, following a disastrous performance in his June 27 debate with former president Donald Trump.

Vietnam landslides kill at least 11 after heavy rain

Landslides triggered by torrential rains in mountainous northern Vietnam buried a 16-seater van, killing at least 11 people and leaving some missing on July 13, state media reported.
Rescue teams including soldiers and citizens in Ha Giang province had found 11 people dead and four injured, state-run Vietnam News Agency reported.
Local authorities said the exact number of people in the van was not known and the aftermath of the heavy rains was complicating search and rescue efforts, the report said.
Krejcikova holds off Paolini to win Wimbledon title
Barbora Krejcikova held off Italian crowd favourite Jasmine Paolini on the “best day of her life” to win the Wimbledon singles title on July 13, coming through 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 on a sunlit Centre Court.
The Czech doubles specialist had dominated the opening set with a near-perfect display but was then rocked by a dazzling Paolini fightback which sent the showpiece into a decider.
A nervous third set swung Krejcikova’s way when she broke serve at 3-3 and she went on to complete victory on her third match point, adding the Wimbledon title to the French Open crown she captured in 2021.
