British man poisoned with Novichok nerve agent regains consciousness

A British man poisoned with the Novichok nerve agent 10 days ago has regained consciousness and is now in a critical but stable condition, Salisbury District Hospital said on Tuesday.

Charlie Rowley, 45, was poisoned along with Dawn Sturgess, who died on Sunday, by the same nerve agent used in the attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in March.

“We have seen a small but significant improvement in the condition of Charlie Rowley,” said Lorna Wilkinson, director of nursing at Salisbury District Hospital.

“He is in a critical but stable condition, and is now conscious.”

Harry and Meghan visit Dublin in first trip as married couple

Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan began a two-day visit to Dublin on Tuesday, their first trip abroad since their wedding in May.

"Pleasure to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to government buildings at the start of their visit to Ireland," Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Twitter, using the titles the Prince and the former Hollywood actress received on their marriage.

Meghan, wearing a dark green Givenchy dress which appeared to have been chosen with Ireland's national colour in mind, and Prince Harry, in a dark suit and green tie, met Varadkar shortly after touching down in Dublin airport.

Assad's son wants 'normal' treatment at maths competition in Romania

The teenage son of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has asked to be treated as a "normal student" while competing in the International Mathematical Olympiad in Romania, an education official said on Tuesday.

Hafez al-Assad, 16, is one of the 615 students participating in the annual competition, taking place in the central city of Cluj-Napoca until Saturday.

"He wants to be treated like a normal student and he acts like one. He checked into a hotel alongside students from 18 countries", a spokesman told AFP. "He didn't ask for anything special; no special conditions, no separate apartment, giving that he shares a room with a colleague."

Cristiano Ronaldo joins Juventus on a 4-year, €100m deal from Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo has opted to leave Spanish giants Real Madrid for Italian champions Juventus for the next - and possibly final - chapter of one of the greatest careers the game has seen.

The shock move on Tuesday by the 33-year-old superstar comes shortly after losing what is likely his last chance to collect the only honour missing from his glittering resume - a World Cup for Portugal.

Speculation that one of the game's greatest players could be up for grabs began when he hinted he was considering leaving the Santiago Bernabeu following May's Champions League final victory.

World Cup: Umtiti header sends streetwise France into final

Samuel Umtiti's 51st-minute header sent an impressive France into the World Cup final with a 1-0 win over Belgium in an absorbing first semi-final on Tuesday.

Didier Deschamps' side will face England or Croatia in Moscow on Sunday as the French look to lift the trophy for the second time following their triumph on home soil in 1998.

In an enthralling, albeit highly tactical rather than incident-packed match, it was once again a set-piece that proved decisive with Umtiti's near-post header from an Antoine Griezmann corner settling matters.
