Crypto execs to throw fund-raiser for Kamala Harris
Cryptocurrency investors and industry executives calling on Vice-President Kamala Harris to pursue a softer regulatory stance on the industry are planning to raise at least US$100,000 (S$130,000) for the Democratic nominee at a Sept 13 Washington fund-raiser.
The grassroots event is scheduled to take place between the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Hispanic Caucus conferences, and aims to bring together a diverse group of donors, the organisers told Reuters.
Tickets to the fund-raiser range from US$500 to US$5,000, said Ms Cleve Mesidor, executive director of the Blockchain Foundation and one of the organisers.
The event’s fund-raising goal is small compared to the hundreds of millions Ms Harris has raked in since becoming the Democratic presidential candidate in July when President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.
Japan to introduce new entry rules for visa-exempt tourists

Japan’s government is planning to introduce a screening system which will require visitors from visa-exempt regions and countries – including those from Singapore – to declare certain personal information before entering the country.
The aim of this system is to reduce the number of visitors that remain in the country beyond their valid period of stay, Japanese newspaper The Sankei Shimbun reported on Aug 21. Visitors are usually allowed to stay in Japan for between 14 and 90 days, depending on their passport.
The provisional name for the system is Jesta, which is modelled after the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (Esta) created by the US for counter-terrorism purposes.

Ukraine urged Mongolia on Aug 30 to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant when he visits on Sept 3, but the Kremlin said it was not worried about the trip.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant in March 2023 against Mr Putin, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. The Kremlin has dismissed the accusation, saying it is politically motivated.
The warrant obliges the court’s 124 member states, including Mongolia, to arrest Mr Putin and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory.
Explosive Trump biopic to hit US movie theatres
A controversial biopic of Donald Trump that depicts the former president raping his wife and which has drawn legal threats from his attorneys will hit US theatres this October, it was reported on Aug 30.
Tiny indie studio Briarcliff Entertainment plans to release The Apprentice for US audiences less than a month before Trump takes on Kamala Harris in the country’s razor-tight presidential election, the Hollywood Reporter said. Representatives for Briarcliff did not immediately respond to AFP queries.
The explosive film about Trump’s younger years caused shockwaves at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Double defending champion Ferreira, who lost his left arm below the elbow aged two after an accident with a grinding machine, won in a photo finish, in cold and wet conditions at the Stade de France.
He clocked a season-best 10.68sec, seven hundredths of a second ahead of silver medallist Korban Best of the USA, with Morocco’s Aymane El Haddaoui a further 0.03sec behind in third.
