Russian strike on Ukraine shopping centre kills 15
Russian drones slammed into a busy shopping centre in eastern Ukraine on Aug 21, killing 15 people in an attack condemned as “cynical and despicable” by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The attack on Kryvyi Rih, Zelensky’s hometown, comes as Russia has intensified its bombardments of Ukrainian cities in recent months.
Videos on social media of the Kryvyi Rih attack showed rescuers rushing to help the wounded on the street outside, as smoke poured out of the building.
A second drone smashed into the roof of the building around half an hour after the first - a repeat “double-tap” strike that Zelensky said in a post on X was “targeting the emergency responders”.

Airbus backs down on return-to-office demand

Airbus has watered down a drive to reduce remote working after protests from unions including a series of strikes in its Spanish facilities, people familiar with the matter said.
Many Spanish workers have been staging on-off strikes since July, and there have been sporadic protests in France over plans by Airbus to force white-collar staff to work on-site four days a week by September, rather than the current three.
Now, managers have been told they can allow staff to maintain existing arrangements that allow them to work at home an average of two days a week, effectively suspending the bid to introduce a mandatory limit of one day, the people said.

China is mulling a bid to host UN climate talks in 2028, two sources familiar with the matter told AFP on Aug 21, as it seeks to burnish its reputation as a leader in the fight against global warming.
Beijing has not yet made a final decision regarding the proposal for the COP33 summit, both sources said, nor is there a clear timeline for doing so.
The host does not have to be decided this year.
Arsenal start Premier League title defence with a bang

Arsenal started their Premier League title defence with a bang by sweeping aside newly-promoted Coventry City with a dominant performance in a 3-0 home win on Aug 21.
The last time the London side retained the top-flight title was in 1935, but it took just 15 minutes for Kai Havertz to show Arsenal’s intent as he coolly guided a Riccardo Calafiori cross into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the box.
New signing Christos Tzolis made the second goal eight minutes later in what was an impressive league debut for the Greek international following his signing from Club Brugge.
