US Vice-President Kamala Harris now leads Donald Trump in three crucial battleground states, according to new polls published on Aug 10, apparently eroding the advantage Trump has enjoyed there over the past year.

The polls of likely voters by The New York Times and Siena College showed Ms Harris leading Trump by an identical 50 percent to 46 percent margin in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Israel faces anger over Gaza school strike rescuers say killed 93

Rescuers in Gaza said an Israeli air strike on a school housing displaced Palestinians killed 93 people on Aug 10, sparking international condemnation despite Israel’s insistence that it was targeting militants.

AFP could not independently verify the toll which, if confirmed, would be one of the largest from a single strike during 10 months of war between Israel and Palestinian militants since Hamas’ Oct 7, 2023 attack.

The bombardment of Al-Tabieen religious school and mosque drew criticism from across the Middle East and beyond alongside calls for a ceasefire, after international mediators invited the warring sides to resume talks towards a long-sought truce and hostage-release deal.

The campaign of US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Aug 10 some of its internal communications were hacked and blamed the Iranian government, citing past hostilities between Trump and Iran without providing direct evidence.

The campaign statement came shortly after news website Politico revealed it began receiving emails in July from an anonymous source offering authentic documents from inside Trump’s operation, including a report about running mate J.D. Vance’s “potential vulnerabilities”.

“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement.

Manchester City end losing run in Community Shield

REUTERS

Manchester City ended a run of three consecutive Community Shield defeats with a win over local rivals Manchester United, the record winners of the curtain-raiser, with a 7-6 win on penalties after the match ended 1-1 at Wembley on Aug 10.

English Premier League holders City had never beaten United, the 21-time winners of the fixture, while the FA Cup champions lost in the Community Shield for the first time since another shoot-out defeat against Chelsea in 2009.

City started better and largely bossed the opening 25 minutes, creating two presentable chances.
