Those who have been hearing or seeing the term “6-7” all over social media and are confused about what it means are not alone as many Gen Zs may not even have heard of this new addition to the Gen Alpha lingo.
Spoiler alert: It means nothing.
Pronounced as “six seven”, the viral term is often seen accompanied by an up and down hand gesture, mimicking weighing two options.
The numbers are part of the lyrics of a song released in 2024, titled Doot Doot, by hip-hop artiste Skrilla. “6-7, I just bipped right on the highway”, goes the song. In it, the term 6-7 is largely understood as referencing 67th street in Chicago – a possible nod to Skrilla’s background.
The phrase took off in early 2025 when it was overlapped with a social media edit of National Basketball Association (NBA) player LaMelo Ball. Videos featuring the Charlotte Hornets’ guard have amassed more than 1.2 million likes on TikTok, attributing the song to the player’s height of 6 feet 7 inches (2.01m).
Meanwhile, the hashtag #67 has been used on more than 1.5 million videos on TikTok.
Outside of social media, the phrase has quickly gained top place in internet speak among Gen Alpha, even though no one can quite agree on how it should be used. Some teens say it to signal indifference, while others use it entirely as slang.
Similar to how millennials once used the phrase 21 or 1738 as fad words, the term can be used in a variety of social contexts.
Other basketball players have been seen using the term during press conferences and post-match interviews in a bid to get fans to create social media edits of them. Former NBA player Shaq or Shaquille O’Neal also featured in a video saying the phrase, accompanied by the hand gestures.
Other sports stars such as Visa Cash App RB’s Isack Hadjar too featured in a video on the team’s TikTok page, garnering more than 135,000 likes. One user commented, “SSSIX SSSEVEN isack is iconic”.
TL;DR, the phrase has taken on a life of its own and can mean whatever people want it to.
