A 43-year-old American man died in Mexico after he was electrocuted in a jacuzzi, while his wife sustained life-threatening injuries.

The woman was sent back to the US to seek medical treatment, reported The Guardian on June 14.

Media reports identified the couple as Mr Jorge Guillen and Ms Lizzette Zambrano from El Paso in Texas.

The incident took place on June 11 at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Penasco, known for its resorts.

In a video taken of the incident, people are screaming while crowding around a jacuzzi. A person is seen performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on someone lying on the ground.

A witness who knows the couple said she saw them in the jacuzzi, but they were not responsive.

When she tried to get into the tub, she was electrocuted and screamed for help, news outlet TMZ reported.

The general prosecutor’s office of justice in Sonora posted on social media on June 13 that the death of the man and the injuries of the woman were “due to a possible electric discharge when both were inside the jacuzzi”.

It also said the woman suffered burns consistent with electric shock.

The Guardian reported that state officials were still trying to identify the cause of the electric shock.

Mr Guillen’s friends have set up a GoFundMe page for him and his wife. More than US$41,000 (S$55,400) has been raised as at June 14.

A write-up on the page says: “Our best friends have experienced a horrible accident. Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends. The love they shared was one for ages. We are asking for your help to bring him home and help with medical expenses for her.”
