World leaders congratulate Biden on ‘historic’ win

PARIS (AFP, REUTERS) - Political leaders from around the world were quick to congratulate Joe Biden after US networks declared him the winner of the bitter White House race over President Donald Trump.

As crowds poured onto the streets of Washington and other cities in exuberant celebration and former US president Barack Obama hailed Biden's win as "decisive" and "historic", here are some of the first reactions from political figures across the globe:

Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga

"Warm congratulations to @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris. I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the Japan-US Alliance and ensure peace, freedom, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

World leaders congratulated Democrat Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris on their presidential election victory on Saturday, even though Donald Trump, with whom several have had rocky relations, had yet to concede.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson

"Congratulations to Joe Biden on his election as President of the United States and to Kamala Harris on her historic achievement.

French President Emmanuel Macron

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kamala Harris

Chittis is the Tamil word for "aunts" that Harris used in her speech while accepting the Democratic Party's nomination for vice-president.
