WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump wished pop singer Taylor Swift and professional football player Travis Kelce “a lot of luck” on their newly announced engagement. 

“He’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy, and I think that she’s a terrific person. So I wish them a lot of luck,” Mr Trump said on Aug 26 when asked by a reporter about the White House.

Fox News broke away from live coverage of the gathering to report the betrothal.

Mr Trump offered kind words for the singer despite his past criticism of the pop star over her support for Democratic politicians.

After

she had endorsed then US vice-president Kamala Harris

in the 2024 presidential election, Mr Trump posted on social media, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”.

Earlier in August, he wrote that he “can’t stand” her and that she had become “NO LONGER HOT”, comparing her with actress Sydney Sweeney.

The singer, who recently completed her record-breaking Eras concert tour, has announced plans for a new album.

Her American football player fiance has won three Super Bowls as a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.
