WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump ruled out the idea of running as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2028 election, as some of his supporters urge him to find ways to circumvent the Constitution’s prohibition on a US president being elected to three terms.
“It’s too cute,” Mr Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Oct 27, saying he was ruling out the possibility.
Some backers of the US President have floated the idea of a different candidate running for the top job and naming Mr Trump as their running mate, with the understanding that they would immediately resign the presidency and elevate him back into the Oval Office.
Mr Trump said he would be “allowed to” attempt that manoeuvre but that he did not think it would have popular support.
“I think the people wouldn’t like that – it wouldn’t be right,” he said.
The president won the 2016 election, was defeated by former President Joe Biden four years later, and then staged a remarkable comeback to retake the White House earlier this year
“I would love to do it – I have the best numbers ever,” Mr Trump said on Oct 26 when asked if he was ruling out a run for a third term.
Still, Mr Trump said Republicans would have a promising slate of candidates in 2028, including Vice-President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was also attending the gaggle with reporters.
“I’m not sure if anybody would run against those two,” Mr Trump said. “I think if they formed a group it would be unstoppable.” BLOOMBERG
