- US President-elect Donald Trump has offered Republican Representative Elise Stefanik the job as US ambassador to the UN, CNN reported on Nov 10, citing two unnamed sources.

Reuters earlier reported that Ms Stefanik, a fierce Trump ally, was under consideration for the role.

The post – a high-profile national security role that comes with offices and a residence in New York City – would bring one of Trump’s highest-profile congressional allies into his administration.

Ms Stefanik is currently the fourth-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives.

“President-elect Trump will begin making decisions on who will serve in his second administration soon. Those decisions will be announced when they are made,” Ms Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump-Vance team, said in an e-mailed statement, without confirming or denying the CNN report.

Ms Stefanik could not be immediately reached.

In an interview on Nov 8 on 77 WABC radio in New York, Ms Stefanik said she is ready to help Trump any way she can, including as a member of his administration because, she said, “he needs strong allies”.

“And you know, I’m honoured to have my name in the mix, but I’m focused on serving the president however that he sees fit, whether that’s passing the agenda in Congress or serving in his administration,” Ms Stefanik said.

Her devotion to Trump has a long public track record.

Ms Stefanik, 40, was among the 147 House Republicans who voted against certifying then President-elect Joe Biden’s 2020 electoral victory over Trump.

She was the first House member to endorse Trump in this third White House bid, and was even a contender earlier in 2024 to be Trump’s vice-presidential running mate.

Trump said on Nov 9 that former Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley and former secretary of state Mike Pompeo

will not be asked to join his administration

under Trump during his previous term and endorsed Trump for president despite having criticised him harshly when she ran against him in the party primaries.
