Strong 6.0 quake shakes northern Peru - US quake monitor

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A strong earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude struck the jungle region of northern Peru on Saturday (Sept 10), the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicenter was located 50 kilometers north of the city of Moyobamba at a depth of 114 kilometers. It occurred at 1008 GMT (6.08pm Singapore time), the monitor said.

There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.

According to the USGS map, the quake epicenter is located on the eastern slope of the Andes, where the mountain range meets the Amazon rainforest.
