ILLINOIS - Multiple tornadoes were reported in Illinois as thunderstorms roared through the Midwest on July 15. More than 13 million people were under tornado warning or watch alerts.
A line of “destructive thunderstorms” moved through north-eastern Illinois, including Chicago, on July 15 night, and several tornadoes had been reported, the National Weather Service’s Chicago bureau said. It added that the agency’s staff had to briefly seek shelter from a tornado.
Just before 9pm, the agency reported a tornado near Sugar Grove, about 64km west of Chicago, that was confirmed by radar.
Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports both warned of severe weather on social media July 15 night. Seventy flights were cancelled and more than 500 were delayed at the two airports, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
By 10pm, the risk of tornadoes had ended in Cook County, which includes Chicago, the weather service said. But the thunderstorms were moving east into Indiana, with some parts of the state’s north-west under tornado warnings until 12.30am.
Nearly 380,000 people were without power in northern Illinois at around 10.40pm.
A tornado watch alert was in place until 1am on July 16 for parts of Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. NYTIMES
