A love story made thousands of feet in the air has captured the hearts of social media users, with many eagerly following the developments of newly nicknamed "Plane Bae" and his mystery woman.

The Internet's excitement began brewing early on Tuesday when US actress and photographer Rosey Blair took to Twitter to share that she had switched seats on an Alaska Airlines flight to Dallas, Texas, so that she could sit with her boyfriend.

Ms Blair said she switched her seat with another woman.

"We made a joke that maybe her new seat partner would be the love of her life and well, now I present you with this thread," Ms Blair wrote.

What unfolded was a series of Instagram stories, detailing the new seatmates' blossoming romance, including their conversation topics, slight elbow movements, and even the cheese board they had shared on board.

Ms Blair also noted that both were personal trainers and vegetarians, and neither of them wore a wedding ring.

Ms Blair's Instagam stories were later posted as a thread on her Twitter account and the Internet soon caught on, with many social media users clamouring for updates.

The Twitter thread has received over 348,000 retweets and more than 868,000 likes since then.

One user even shared how he had met his future wife a decade ago on a flight from London to Denver.

Ms Blair promised that she would follow the couple's story "all the way to baggage claim" and she did, later sharing a photo of the pair walking away from the area together.

"Thank you for following the saga of #hunkyplaneguy and #prettyplanegirl we love them. We love you. We love love. Goodnight everybody!!!!"she wrote.

Now dubbed "Plane Bae", "hunky plane guy" was soon identified as Euan Holden, a former footballer who is now signed on to a modelling agency.

"Hilarious, knew you were taking pictures" he had said on Twitter, in response to Ms Blair's updates.

He told ABC News in an interview on Wednesday: "I walked on a plane just ready to get home and ended up sitting next to a lovely girl and had such a great time with (her) on the flight.

"If there's a message going out, it's that there's still hope."

On the TODAY Show on Thursday morning, he added that he plans on meeting up with "pretty plane girl", identified only as Helen.

He said: "She's a very, very lovely girl."

While Helen has not yet identified herself, Ms Blair said in her latest Twitter update that she "feels positively about all of this".
