A new, possibly more transmissible coronavirus variant is spreading in New York, said researchers. Known as B1526, it makes up about 12 per cent of cases and was identified last November.
Several studies have noted some worrying characteristics where the new variant might be more resistant to some vaccines than earlier versions. One concern is a change in the virus' spike protein that is believed to weaken the body's immune response to the virus.
