WASHINGTON – It was not explicitly on the agenda, but Asean seemed to weigh on the minds of the leaders of the United States, Japan and South Korea as they met in a summit widely described as historic.
The huddle on Friday in Camp David, the tranquil presidential retreat where key American diplomatic accords have been forged, produced an unprecedented pledge that the three nations would consult and coordinate on security policy.
