Even as Republican presidential front runner Donald Trump basked in the adulation after his seven victories on Super Tuesday, someone else inadvertently stole the show on social media.

Step forward New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who last Friday (Feb 26) kicked up a cloud of controversy when he declared his allegiance to Mr Trump.

Having presented the billionaire at a Super Tuesday press conference, Mr Christie, who once dismissed his new best friend as an "entertainer-in-chief", was then seen awkwardly standing to Mr Trump's right as he began his speech.

That, and his subsequent facial expressions that suggested he wanted to be somewhere else, set Twitter abuzz.

Within minutes, the hashtag #FreeChrisChristie started trending, with Republican member of Congress Justin Amash also giving his take.

"@ChrisChristie just gave what looked like a coerced confession," he tweeted.
