The many unresolved contradictions swirling at the centre of American politics crystallised in

the first political debate of the 2024 election season.

Eight candidates butted heads in a two-hour spectacle on Wednesday night at the start of a lengthy process that they well knew could end with none of them being crowned as the Republican Party nominee.
