MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she will announce early Feb 3 the details of her government’s “Plan B” to defend the country against US tariffs.

After US President Donald Trump

ordered 25 per cent tariffs on exports from Mexico

on Feb 1, Ms Sheinbaum said she was asking her economy minister to respond with tariff and non-tariff measures, without elaborating.

“We have to act with a cool head and love for the people,” Ms Sheinbaum said in an eight-minute video posted on X on Feb 2. “To our Mexican brothers and sisters in the US, here is your president and an entire people to defend you.”

During the video, Sheinbaum repeated much of her message the day before, firmly rejecting that in his tariff order Mr Trump linked Mexico’s government to criminal drug-trafficking groups. Again, she accused the US of doing nothing to prevent illegal drug sales on its streets and reiterated that Mexico has seized tons of drugs,

including fentanyl

.

Ms Sheinbaum said that the tariffs ordered by Mr Trump will have serious effects on the economies of both countries, but above all will increase the costs of products exported from Mexico to its northern neighbour.

She reiterated that Mexico doesn’t want confrontation, but would rather collaborate with the US to attack the problems that concern Mr Trump and were the cause of his tariffs: undocumented migration and drug trafficking into the US.

At the end of the video, Ms Sheinbaum suggested that there is still hope in the face of the formal imposition of tariffs on Feb 4.

“Let’s wait for President Trump’s response to our proposal,” she said. BLOOMBERG
