NEW YORK - Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has been hospitalised for injuries suffered in a car crash in New Hampshire, a spokesperson said.
Mr Giuliani’s car was struck from behind at high speed on Aug 30, said Mr Michael Ragusa, the head of the former mayor’s security.
He was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebra, injuries to his left arm and a lower leg, as well as multiple cuts and bruises, Mr Ragusa said in a statement.
Mr Giuliani, 81, was a moderate Republican mayor in a Democratic city, but won the accolades “America’s Mayor” and Time magazine’s Person of the Year for his response to the terror attacks on New York on Sept 11, 2001.
But he turned increasingly partisan in the coming years and campaigned vigorously for Mr Donald Trump in his 2016 campaign.
He became Mr Trump’s personal attorney during the President’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election that he lost to Mr Joe Biden.
Mr Giuliani was suspended from practising law in the city he once led.
Just before the accident, Mr Giuliani had been flagged down by a woman who said she was the victim of domestic violence and asked Mr Giuliani to call the police, Mr Ragusa said.
The former mayor stayed with the woman until the authorities arrived.
Mr Ragusa said the rear-end accident was not a targeted attack on Mr Giuliani. BLOOMBERG
