MEXICO CITY (REUTERS) - Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said on Tuesday (May 16) he expects the administration of US President Donald Trump to notify Congress early next week of plans to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The move, which will start a 90-day countdown for talks, would be a step towards fulfilling a campaign promise by Trump who vowed to scrap the 1994 deal between the United States, Canada and Mexico if he cannot adjust it to benefit US interests.
Guajardo spoke to media in Mexico a day after holding meetings in Washington with US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and other US officials.
Guajardo also said that he would meet with recently confirmed US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in Vietnam on Thursday (May 18), adding that a spat over sugar with the United States could be resolved within two weeks.
