NEWRY, MAINE (REUTERS) - Couples jumped over logs and trudged through the mud to compete in the 18th annual North American Wife Carrying Championship in Maine on Saturday (Oct 7).

A couple from Virginia, Jake and Kirsten Barney, won the contest which earned them 12 cases of Goose Island beer and $630 in cash.

"Well, we got second last year, so we we wanted to shoot for first this year," said Jake after the race.
