The first phase of the long and lumbering political dance through which the Republican Party chooses its presidential candidate is over. And despite skipping all four Republican presidential debates, former president Donald Trump is leading all four of his party’s rivals.

He is expected to keep his lead when the second phase begins with the caucus in Iowa in six weeks. But will his hold over likely Republican voters outlast the many twists and turns ahead?
