WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump said on Sept 7 that he had a great conversation with Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Mr Trump made the comment as he left the White House to attend the men’s US Open tennis final, but did not elaborate on his talk with Mr Tokayev.
“We had a great conversation,” Mr Trump said.
In a letter to the US leader in July, Mr Tokayev said he was prepared for a constructive dialogue on trade issues after Mr Trump slapped fresh 25 per cent tariffs on goods from Kazakhstan from August.
The US and Kazakhstan – which borders Russia and China – formalised an “enhanced strategic partnership” agreement during Mr Trump’s first term in 2017 that emphasised security and trade cooperation.
The trade turnover between Kazakhstan and the US in 2024 amounted to US$4.2 billion (S$5.4 billion), 4 per cent higher than in 2023.
