A three-year-old great dane has died just days after he was named the world’s tallest living male dog.
Kevin “crossed the rainbow bridge” after falling ill and undergoing an unplanned operation, according to an announcement by the Guinness World Records on June 24.
Kevin measured 0.97m from his feet to his withers, which is the highest point of his shoulder blades. The average height of a male great dane is around 0.76m. He was about 2.13m tall when he stood on his hind legs.
He had lived with his owners, Tracy and Roger Wolfe, in West Des Moines, Iowa, in the United States.
Mrs Wolfe said her family is “devastated” by Kevin’s death, describing him as the “best giant boy”.
She added: “We are so glad that he was able to break the record and have that light on him. He absolutely adored the attention. I wish these giant breeds, and all dogs, could live longer than they do. It’s never enough time.”
The previous record holder – another great dane by the name of Zeus – had also died at the age of three in 2023. He measured at 1.046m.
A spokesman for Guinness World Records said: “We are deeply saddened to learn that Kevin suddenly passed away after unexpected health complications.
“Tracy and the team at the vet clinic she works in did everything they could to save Kevin after he became ill. Our thoughts and support are with the Wolfe family as they navigate this difficult time.”
