Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Nov 17, on the sidelines of this year’s Group of 20 (G-20) summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In a Facebook post after their meeting, PM Wong said both countries share a strong partnership.

Besides growing trade and investment links, the two countries work together in areas such as information and communications technology (ICT) and skills development, he noted.

PM Wong said the meeting was “extra meaningful”, given that it took place on Mr Ramaphosa’s 72nd birthday.

In a separate post, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan added that Singapore’s relations with South Africa are underpinned by strong economic ties that have the potential to grow significantly.

South Africa will take over the G-20 presidency in 2025, marking the first time this major international meeting is held on the African continent. The summit is expected to focus on the continent’s interests, as well as those of the Global South, which refers to less developed countries.

an exchange of high-level visits

by then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

PM Wong is

in Brazil from Nov 17 to 20 for the G-20 summit.

This follows his trip to Lima, Peru, from Nov 14 to 16 for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
