Hotter weather will persist across north-west Europe, with Paris, London and Berlin all set for their hottest day of the season over the weekend and into next week.
The French capital will see highs of 37 deg C on Aug 12, the hottest so far in 2024, according to Weather Services International. Berlin and London will also sizzle over the weekend. In Spain, where the summer has already been harsh, heat wave warnings have intensified with temperatures set to reach 40 deg C near Sevilla and Cordoba as well as on the island of Mallorca according to the State Meteorological Agency.
The scorching heat has also extended the regions facing the risk of wildfires, which now stretch as far north as southeastern England, including areas around London, according to forecasts from Copernicus.
Wildfires have been a major feature of the past month in Southern Europe, with global warming bringing hotter and drier conditions to the continent. In Greece, they have put lives at risk and disrupted travel and tourism, with 30 fires remaining active in the 24 hours to 6.30pm on Aug 6.
The Eastern Aegean Sea islands of Chios, Samos, Ikaria and Psara – all popular tourists spots – are on high alert for more blazes. Temperatures in parts of the country will reach 38 deg C on Aug 7, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service. BLOOMBERG
