BUENOS AIRES, Nov 29 - Nicaraguan authorities released about 40 political critics from prison on Saturday, two Nicaraguan political activists told Reuters.
The released prisoners will remain under house arrest and report regularly to the police, they said.
Alfredo Gutierrez, coordinator of the Liberales Nicaragua party, based outside of Nicaragua, said the activist Alejandro Hurtado, who the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights reported was arrested in January, was among the several dozen released prisoners.
Ana Margarita Vijil, from the opposition party Unamos, said that her organization knew about the release of "about 40 people" and that many of their families hadn't seen them for months "or even years."
Nicaragua's co-president, Rosario Murillo, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. REUTERS
