The

United States-led strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen

amount to the most significant American military intervention in the Middle East in years.

Although US President Joe Biden clearly hopes that they would be a one-off occurrence, the chances are that the attacks against the Houthis represent just another twist in an expanding spiral of regional violence, one from which the US will not be able to extricate itself.
