MORRISTOWN, New Jersey – US President Donald Trump said on May 25 that US negotiators had "very good" talks with an Iranian delegation over the weekend as he seeks a deal to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.
"I think we could have some good news on the Iran front," Mr Trump told reporters at the Morristown, New Jersey, airport as he prepared to return to Washington after a weekend at his Bedminster golf club.
Mr Trump said serious progress had been made.
"I don't know if I'll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good," he said.
He did not elaborate on the talks in Rome between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and an Iranian delegation.
The US and Iran held talks last week in Rome that Iranian Foreign Minister and lead negotiator Abbas Araghchi said could lead to an agreement in the next couple of meetings.
“I’d love that to happen, because I’d love to see no bombs dropped, and a lot of people dead,” Mr Trump said. “I think there’s a good chance that it could happen.”
Mr Trump’s latest comments, along with the more optimistic tone at the end of the Rome talks, may help soothe the oil market, which had been unsettled by a CNN report earlier last week that Israel was making plans to potentially attack Iran’s nuclear sites. REUTERS, BLOOMBERG
