Israel’s government has ratified the ceasefire agreement and hostage release deal concluded with Hamas, the radical Palestinian organisation in control of Gaza.

After a heated Cabinet debate, which, unusually for Israel, dragged on into the early hours of a Saturday – known as the Sabbath and the day of rest for Jewish believers – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu overcame opposition from his hard-right ministers and

secured the Cabinet’s approval for the deal.
