LONDON – The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of radical Palestinian organisation Hamas, not only diminishes the prospects for a ceasefire in the current Gaza war, but also heightens the dangers of a much wider Middle East conflict.
Although it has not admitted responsibility for the assassination, it is believed that Israel was behind a single, very precise missile strike that killed Haniyeh during the early hours of July 31, while he was on a visit to the Iranian capital of Tehran.
