SAN JOSE/PANAMA CITY – A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Panama-Costa Rica border region on July 22, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The quake was at a depth of 3km, according to USGS data, and its epicentre was located about 5km south-east of the town of Puerto Armuelles, in the Panamanian region of Chiriqui that stands in the border with Costa Rica.
The local authorities from the two Central American nations did not immediately report any damages.
“Our response units are in different parts of the province of Chiriqui conducting monitoring, after the strong seismic movement recorded in the region,” Panama’s National Civil Protection System said on social media platform X.
The University of Panama’s Institute of Geosciences registered a 5.9-magnitude aftershock and no immediate damage was reported either. REUTERS
