JERUSALEM – Surgery to remove the prostate of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “ended successfully and without complications”, his office said.

“The Prime Minister woke up from the anaesthesia, his condition is good and he is fully conscious,” according to the statement issued late on Dec 29.

He has been “transferred to a secure underground recovery unit. He is expected to remain in the hospital for observation in the coming days”.

The 75-year-old Prime Minister, the nation’s longest-serving leader,

underwent surgery after his office announced last week

that he had a urinary tract infection resulting from a benign enlargement of the prostate.

Mr Netanyahu “had received antibiotic treatment that eradicated the infection”, his office said, but doctors opted to go ahead with the operation.

Mr Netanyahu, who has suffered from several health issues in recent years, has led the nation in military action after the Oct 7, 2023, attack in which militant group Hamas killed 1,200 people in southern Israel. The war has expanded regionally, including to the West Bank, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and Iran.

He has weathered mass protests against his leadership, and in recent days, he has testified on his behalf in a corruption trial.

His testimony for this week was cancelled by the court at his request and at the prosecution’s consent. It is tentatively scheduled to resume on Jan 6, 2025.

Earlier in 2024, Mr Netanyahu had hernia surgery that his office said was discovered during a routine exam a day earlier.

In July 2023, the Prime Minister had a cardiac pacemaker implanted about a week after he was hospitalised for what doctors said was dehydration. His office said then that he had suffered from dizziness caused by a day in the sun during an intense heatwave.

Sheba Medical Centre insisted upon his discharge that Mr Netanyahu was in “excellent condition”, that his heart was “completely normal” and “at no point was any heart arrhythmia found”.  BLOOMBERG
