Gmail to let users change their addresses while keeping data

Under the shift, which Google said would eventually be rolled out to all users, old addresses would remain active.

NEW YORK – For more than 20 years, Gmail, the world’s largest e-mail account provider, has made it easy for users to change the username on their e-mail accounts.

But if users wanted to keep all their data and services – like YouTube or Google Drive – connected to their @gmail accounts, the e-mail address itself always had to stay the same.
