OSLO – The Norwegian officials in charge of awarding the Nobel Peace Prize are investigating information that online bets on the 2025 recipient surged overnight, suggesting a potential leak of information.
Bets for Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for fighting for democracy,
“We’re looking into it,” said Mr Erik Aasheim, spokesman for the Nobel Institute, the executive arm of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, when asked to comment on news, first reported by the local newspapers Aftenposten and Finansavisen.
The secretive five-member committee had made a decision on Oct 6, according to earlier reports in the local media. Machado was informed about it within minutes of the announcement at 11am in Oslo (5pm, Singapore time) on Oct 10.
Three accounts at Polymarket that mainly placed bets on Ms Machado made a combined profit of about US$90,000 (S$117,000), according to Finansavisen. BLOOMBERG
