STOCKHOLM (REUTERS) - Winners of the Nobel prizes will be announced in the coming days.

The prestigious awards are given out each year by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Perhaps the most talked-about category: the coveted peace prize.

This year, the Colombian peace accord - which ended 50 years of war between FARC rebels and the government - is tipped as a top contender.

Other nominees include civilian rescuers in Syria known as the White Helmets, negotiators of the Iran nuclear deal and US surveillance whistle blower Edward Snowden.

One Norwegian peace analyst thinks Russian human rights activist Svetlana Gannushkina will grab the prize, saying the choice would be an overdue rebuke to President Vladimir Putin.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Oct 7th.

Other categories announced are Physics, Chemistry and Literature.
