PARIS Prosecutors in southern French city Aix-en-Provence have since May been investigating an incendiary device found on a high-speed train line, sources familiar with the case told AFP on July 26.

The news, confirming a report by broadcaster BFMTV, comes after high-speed lines across much of France were

crippled by early-morning arson attacks on July 26

on vital fibre optic cables, hours ahead of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

The device was discovered on May 8, the day the Olympic flame arrived in Mediterranean port city Marseille, the sources said.

No clear link to the Olympics has so far been established either with the July 26 attacks or the incendiary device, found on the TGV high-speed line between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence.

Paris prosecutors are investigating the July 26 arson attacks as a suspected bid to undermine France’s “fundamental national interests”. AFP
