A shift in the jet stream is forecast to drive a rapid swing from warm to cool temperatures across Western Europe towards the end of this week.
Unseasonably warm weather is expected first, with the jet stream positioned over the Atlantic pushing low-pressure across the continent, according to Mr Alex Deakin, a meteorologist with the British Met Office.
Over the next few days, temperatures will be as much as 8 deg C above the norm in the Iberian Peninsula and other parts of the continent. Madrid could reach 35 deg C on Sept 18, according to national forecasters AEMET.
Over the weekend, the jet stream is expected to move north and develop a kink, bringing a wave of colder, drier air from the north, and boosting heating demand. Temperatures in Paris could drop to as low as 10 deg C on Sept 21, with 8 deg C in London on Sept 22, according to national forecasters. BLOOMBERG
