GENEVA – Swiss International Air Lines said on Dec 26 that an engine problem might have been what caused one of its planes to make an emergency landing this week after smoke filled the cockpit and cabin.
The Airbus A220-300 jet with 74 passengers aboard was flying from Bucharest to Zurich when it had to land in Graz, Austria on Dec 23.
Two crew members remained in hospital, Swiss said, including one in intensive care.
“The initial findings point to a technical problem in one of the engines,” the airline said in a statement, adding that the cause had not been conclusively determined.
The engine was reportedly made by Pratt & Whitney.
“We continue to operate flights with the A220 because... we have no indication that the safety of the aircraft type is in question.”
In 2023, Swiss had been forced to temporarily ground part of its A220 fleet to inspect reliability problems with its Pratt & Whitney engines. AFP
