BRUSSELS – While politicians talk, their intelligence services whisper. So, it was entirely in keeping with this principle that the recent visit to Europe by Mr John Ratcliffe, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the US’ top foreign intelligence service, went largely unmentioned.

Still, Mr Ratcliffe’s late October tour of Brussels was significant, as it was designed to reassure Europeans that the US will continue sharing intelligence with its closest allies despite unprecedented political interference from President Donald Trump.
