LONDON – Two children have died following a knife attack in northwest England, police said on Monday, adding they had arrested a 17-year-old male on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Nine other children were injured, six of them critically and two adults were also in a critical condition.

Merseyside Police said armed police had arrested the suspect and seized a knife after being called to reports of a stabbing at around 11.50am (6.50pm in Singapore) at an address in Southport, north of Liverpool.

Police also said motivation for the incident was unclear but it was not being treated as terrorism-related and they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the stabbings.

“Horrendous and deeply shocking news emerging from Southport. My thoughts are with all those affected,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on X.

“I would like to thank the police and emergency services for their swift response. I am being kept updated as the situation develops,” he said.

Britain’s Interior Minister Yvette Cooper said, also on X: “I am deeply concerned at the very serious incident in Southport. All my thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected”.

“I have spoken to the Merseyside Police and crime commissioner to convey full support to the police, and thanks to the emergency services responding,” she added.

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital said it declared a major incident, and its emergency department was extremely busy. It asked parents to bring their children in only if it was urgent. REUTERS
