WASHINGTON - US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed on Jan 10 Washington’s support for Ukraine, new US sanctions against Russia
Mr Zelensky, in a social media post, thanked Mr Biden for Washington's support in Ukraine's nearly three-year war with Russia and for "the vital role the United States has played in uniting the international community".
Mr Zelensky said the presidents also discussed new US sanctions against Russia’s energy sector, “which helps (Russian President Vladimir) Putin bankroll the war”.
“He must feel the cost of his war by seeing it directly impact his own pockets,” he wrote.
Mr Zelensky said he and Mr Biden discussed the need to keep building up Ukraine’s air defences “to protect lives in Ukrainian cities and villages from Russian terror – daily missile and drone attacks”.
US-supplied Patriot missiles, he said, “have proven their effectiveness, and we must continue to enhance this capacity”.
The White House later said both Mr Biden and Mr Zelensky underscored the importance of continuing to support Kyiv in the war against Russia.
“It is now clear that President (Vladimir) Putin’s war against Ukraine has been a disaster for Russia. Due to the Ukrainian people’s courage and resolve, and with the support of the United States, Russia has failed to achieve any of its strategic objectives in Ukraine,” the White House said in a statement.
