OTTAWA - Prime Minister Mark Carney promised on May 2 to launch the greatest transformation of Canada’s economy since World War II during his first press conference after his election victory.

“This will be an incredibly exciting time, as we take control of our economic destiny to create a new Canadian economy,” he said.

Mr Carney and his Liberal Party

won a historic victory on April 28

in snap elections focused on President Donald Trump’s threats to Canada’s economy and sovereignty.

“Canadians elected a new government to stand up to President Trump and to build a strong economy,” Mr Carney said, adding that Canadians also want his administration to tackle the high cost of living.

“As prime minister, I’ve heard these messages loud and clear, and I’ll act on them with focus and determination.”

On May 6, Mr Carney will travel to Washington to meet Mr Trump to discuss trade and security issues.

“Our focus will be on both immediate trade pressures and the broader future economic and security relationship between our two sovereign nations,” said Mr Carney.

He also announced that he would unveil his new minority Liberal government in the week of May 12, and that Parliament would return on May 26.

King Charles III – Canada’s head of state, as it is a British Commonwealth country – will deliver the opening speech, Mr Carney said. AFP
