Viral drinkware brand Stanley has recalled two of its travel mug products in the United States and Canada, following reports of people getting scalded when using them.
The US’ Consumer Product Safety Commission on Dec 12 announced Stanley’s recall of the Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs, with about 2.6 million units in the US affected.
The Toronto Star reported on the same day that 180,000 such mugs had been sold in Canada, advising consumers to contact Stanley for replacements.
The recall came after the 111-year-old company received 91 reports worldwide, including 16 in the US and three in Canada, of the affected travel mugs’ lids detaching during use.
“These mug’s lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,” the US commission said.
Some 38 burn injuries have been reported worldwide, including two in the US and one in Canada, with 11 consumers worldwide requiring medical attention.
The recalled mugs have one of the following product identification numbers printed on the bottom of the mug:
Switchback
12 ounces - 20-01437
16 ounces - 20-01436, 20-02211
Trigger Action
12 ounces - 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825
16 ounces - 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957
20 ounces - 20-02034, 20-02746
Amazon Singapore currently carries the Trigger Action mug for sale, but not the Switchback, according to The Straits Times’ checks online on the evening of Dec 16.

Stanley cups – not to be confused with the US hockey trophy – have in recent years seen a surge in popularity after they went viral on social media.
The colourful range of cups and tumblers, in particular the Stanley Quencher, which is sold in Singapore on the official Lazada and Shopee stores for nearly $60, sparked a craze that saw the drinkware company’s sales jump from US$70 million (S$94.5 million) in annual sales to US$750 million in 2023, reported CNBC news.
