Difficult dilemma over a desktop Mac

The spinning rainbow wheel is a common occurrence on my eight-year-old, 21.5-inch Apple iMac these days.

Many Mac users are familiar with this sight, officially known as the Spinning Wait Cursor. It happens when an app is not responding or has crashed.
